October is Indigenous Business Month, a national celebration highlighting the innovation, creativity, and resilience of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander businesses. This month-long initiative recognises the economic, cultural, and social contributions of Indigenous-owned businesses and inspires the next generation of entrepreneurs. At Queensland Museum, we are proud to partner with incredible Indigenous businesses, showcasing their stories and products within our shop, while supporting cultural preservation and economic self-determination.
In celebration we are highlighting some Indigenous Businesses that feature products within our shop.
Wingaru: Aboriginal Educational Games

Wingaru Education is a proudly Aboriginal-owned business based on Gadigal Country, founded with a mission to change the way Australia learns and talks about Aboriginal people and communities. Wingaru – which means “to think” in Dharug – specialises in educational games and digital learning resources that promote cultural understanding and truth-telling.
Their products are designed for learners of all ages, encouraging engagement with First Nations culture in fun, interactive ways:
- Midden – Explore traditional ecological knowledge through an educational card game.

Skeenarang Booma: Traditional Aboriginal Art and Tools

Skeenarang Booma is a family-owned Aboriginal business from Far North Queensland, specialising in handcrafted cultural artefacts. Founded by elder Joe Skeen Snr, a master boomerang maker, the business has been passing down traditional techniques for over 70 years. His son, Joshua K Skeen, now continues the family legacy, crafting authentic Aboriginal artworks, boomerangs, and clap sticks.
At the Queensland Museum Shop, you can find:
- Message Stones – Artworks carrying spiritual and cultural meaning.
- Traditional Boomerangs – Handcrafted and designed with traditional Aboriginal techniques.
- Clap Sticks – Musical instruments used in ceremonies and storytelling.
These pieces are not just souvenirs- they are a connection to Aboriginal heritage and craftsmanship.
